Super Seniors Keep Fit Class

The Super Seniors Keep Fit Club is a gentle comedy about friendship. The story revolves around the relationship between three characters who have known each other most of their lives and now meet at a weekly keep-fit class. These classes ignite old relationships and stir up past problems.
The action starts with the three retirees learning that their instructor has left them calling them useless, the plot continues as they try to get fit without help. The play is resolved, after much arguing and gossiping, when the trio come together in a successful venture. The action is set in the community hall of a small Highland village, the hall is threatened with closure. Writer Fiona Black worked in theatre and TV drama production (her credits can be found on IMDB here). After completing an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, she concentrated on writing. Her play ‘Just William’ had a rehearsed reading by In-Motion Theatre company and her short play ‘Be Careful’ won the June award 2021 from London Playwrights and is available to watch here. Fiona has also had poems published by PEN and in the anthology ‘Uncovered Voices’. |
The Competition
The first round of the competition took place at the Nairn Community and Arts Centre on 24th and 25th February 2023. We were one of six plays to be entered at this stage and were delighted to win the MacLeod Trophy for 2nd place, taking us through to the Divisionals in Thurso. We were also thrilled to see the first presentation of the Claire Cameron trophy for best stage presentation being awarded to the Loch Ness Luvvies at this event.

The second round took place in Thurso on 24th and 25th March 2023. This was another round with a very high standard of theatre across the two nights and we were very pleased to once again take the overall 2nd place trophy. The photo to the left is of our adjudicator Ben Humphry presenting the trophy to our director Fiona Black.

The Scottish final took place in Stirling in early May. Unfortunately, we did not place in this next round and our SCDA journey came to an end, but we are very proud of our team to have made it so far. There was an incredible amount of talent throughout each of the rounds and we extend our congratulations to everyone who took part this year!

The Claire Cameron Trophy for Stage Presentation
In December 2022, one of the long term supporters of Moray Firth SCDA, Claire Cameron, passed away. Claire was an amazing artist and a very creative individual, and for over 40 years she was a constant contributor both on and off stage with the Florians. Claire spent a lot of time in the Highland Hospice during the last few weeks of her life, and made the decision to have all of her artwork donated to them for auction after she passed away.
When the decision was made to retire the trophy for set production, the committee unanimously agreed that it should be renamed the "Claire Cameron Trophy for Stage Presentation" in honour of the many sets she herself created over the years.
We were delighted to see the first presentation of this award at the 2023 SCDA competition, where it was awarded to the Loch Ness Luvvies.
