A message from our panto writer, Trevor Nicol:
‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ is my most recent script, and was the first I’d written for a number of years. I’d always shied away from the story for obvious reasons – having a beanstalk that grows up to the clouds in a small converted wooden hut to me presented huge technical issues. There was also the even larger conundrum of a giant to contend with. In the end however, I thought it was too good a storyline to avoid. It also gave us the opportunity of having a pantomime cow in the show, which is always good for the kids. The basic plot was all there – a giant and his henchman who terrorise the neighbourhood, Jack exchanging the family cow for a bag of beans, the beans being thrown out of the window by Dame Trott and the sprouting of the beanstalk. Add in the sub-plot of the magic harp Melody and you have all the ingredients for a magical evening’s entertainment. I even included a golden egg laying goose and a really horrid villain called Fleshcreep, who is the henchman of Blunderbore the Giant. |
Hopefully in future years this panto will also be revived like the others. I’d like to think that these pantos might continue to have a life even after I’m gone, which would be a great legacy to leave the Florians of the future. I always remember the first panto we did back in 1992, which was ‘Cinderella.’ As with so many productions, when you have been rehearsing something for weeks in front of your fellow cast you’re never quite sure how it’s going to go down with an audience. On the first night of ‘Cinderella’ I was standing backstage waiting to go on, when the audience started to laugh for the first time, and then carried on laughing throughout the night. It was a feeling I’ll never forget.
